Love your lashes!

A couple weeks ago I booked an appointment to get my first set of lash extensions.  Until recently I thought they were a luxury reserved for the Hollywood elite and models.  Certainly they were an unnecessary expense for this "medium-maintenance" girl.  What I didn’t realize is how much they are becoming increasingly popular and that quality lashes are slowly becoming readily available for an everyday look.  My appointment was with Jessica at AmorLashes, one of the few companies in the Austin area that offers 100% real Siberian Mink lashes.  Before you start drawing up animal rights signs, know that they don’t kill the animals to gather these, they simply brush the minks and then collect the fur by hand.   Jessica is a Certified Licensed Esthetician who decided to open up Amor Lashes in order to offer her clients the convenience of being the only mobile lash service company in the area!

Jessica brings in her table and within minutes I’m laying down with my lower lashes carefully held down by pads while she goes to work individually gluing lashes to my existing upper lashes.  It’s certainly a tedious process but the time passes quickly as Jessica and I chatted it up.  She was fun and easy to talk to which is a necessity with any salon experience in my opinion.  By the time we were done, Jessica hops up and runs over to see me look in the mirror for the first time.  I don’t think I was prepared for the dramatic difference it made!  To be fair I was worried at first that maybe they were too long.  My doubt didn’t last long though and I admittedly caught myself looking in every reflective surface throughout the day to see the difference they made.  I realized how quickly I had already grown to like them and feel comfortable with them.  The quality of the lashes means that they don’t look and feel like the cheaper options that are heavy and plastic.  Instead they are soft and super lightweight and therefore not only are they better for your natural lashes but also allows you to add more to each lash giving you a full look.

Fast-forward 2 weeks and I am IN LOVE with my Amor Lashes!  This past weekend I went out to meet up with some neighbors and my dear friend stops and immediately asks me, “What kind of mascara are you wearing because it is amazing!”  I smiled and said, “None!” She was shocked to find out the truth.  Even 2 weeks later my extensions still blend into my natural lashes so well that you can’t even tell that I have fake lashes on.

Mink lashes are the perfect solution for brides who are looking for an easy maintenance and long lasting look between the engagement parties, bridal pictures, and of course for the wedding day.  Depending on the care of your lashes, you usually need a refill after a month or two.  Since they are semi-permanent and longer lasting than over-the-counter fake lashes, you don’t have to worry about them falling off or getting into disarray when it matters most.  My favorite part is that no mascara means no worries about smudging or runny makeup messes.  They are natural enough that I feel just a little extra flirty wearing them during the day but dramatic enough that they give my eyes that extra pop I want at night.   Right now Amor lashes is offering a special on a full set of lashes.  Head over to their website,  to find out more details and be sure to tell her Your Very Own Fairy Godmother sent you!

Game Plan Entertainment!

Today, we had a sneak peek of the new venue, Game Plan Entertainment, in South Austin.  They’re having an open house on February 20^th, so mark your calendar!  (Consider this your invitation.)  I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not “big” on video games, but this place is awesome!  Giant Jenga, Giant Connect Four, bean bag chairs, old school Atari, Asteroids, Pac-Man, Mario Brothers, Duck Hunt, SkeeBall, Foosball, Air Hockey, Golden Tee, and every new top-of-the line gaming systems that can network up to 8 players while they sit in a swanky gaming room with couches and cocktail tables are just some of the great features of this place.  It is available to rent for private events, and the games are “free play” – you read that correctly: NO TOKENS.  How much do you spend at D&B or Main Event when you go?  I know that we can easily spend at least $50 per person on games alone.  Game Plan Ent. rents for $299 for 2 hours and up to 15 people (except Friday and Saturday nights.)  It’s $100 for each additional hour.  You can bring in your own food and drinks (TABC certified bartenders are required if you bring alcohol.)  Friday and Saturday night buyouts are $1,800.  They have stereo systems that you can use with your iPod and enough screens to show any video, slideshow, or presentation you could dream of.  Clearly, The Fairy Godmothers had fun, and Dave with DCM Photography caught us in the act.

Fabulous FG Friday Cocktail: The FG Velvet Snowflake

Pin It If you attended the Bliss Bridal Magazine preview party last night, then you might have seen this tasty concoction in the cover spread!
While designing the cover spread, we wanted a NEW cocktail to include that reflected the winter white of the palette we had chosen.  The Fairy Godmother Velvet Snowflake fluttered its way into our hearts and glasses!  (You still have time to run out on your lunch break to get the ingredients for this Fab FG Friday cocktail.)

The Fairy Godmother Velvet Snowflake

• 2 parts vanilla vodka
• 1 part white creme de cacao
• 1 1/2 parts white chocolate Irish cream
• Garnish with white chocolate curls or cake sparkles (or if you are like us, both!)

Fabulous FG Friday Cocktail: Seafoam Sangria

Pin It You've seen our behind the scenes video and the spread in  Bliss Bridal Magazine this week.  In case you missed the cocktail (although even HGTV didn't miss it, it's on their Seafoam Green Mood Board), we created a signature drink to match the theme.  Texas heat is showing us no reprieve, so enjoy this summertime cocktail!

Seafoam Sangria

3 parts white wine

2 parts blue Hpnotiq Liquer

1 part Ginger Ale

Garnish as desired.

Large batches are easy to prepare and can be served over ice or chilled.

An Icy Cool Groom's "Cake"

Anyone who knows Allison and Brandon will tell you they are truly two people who clearly were meant to be together.  When Allison told us they wanted to have frozen yogurt served at their wedding in place of the traditional groom’s cake, we immediately knew of another pair meant to be together.  The Fairy Godmothers went to work bringing together a few of our favorite vendors with the couple’s favorite froyo company, The Yogurt Experience, to create a memorable surprise on their wedding night.  (They are Groupon today for their North Austin Trailer Yard location!)

It was almost a year ago that Sean Leahy, owner and sculptor at Full Spectrum Ice, told us about his vision to create a functional ice bar that could be used for serving a frozen treat such as gelato or ice cream from behind the bar but was waiting for the right bride to come around so he could create it.  Fast forward to New Years Eve when Brandon proposed to Allison with the words “Marry Me?” lit up with 5 foot tall letters formed from over 1200 Christmas lights stranded together atop a hillside near the 360 bridge.  We sent design ideas to Sean and told him about the couple's engagement story. What he came up with and sketched out turned into an amazing sculpture perfectly fit for the elegant affair, personalized with the meaningful “Marry Me” phrase lit up and a string of Christmas lights buried deep inside the ice.

We truly enjoyed working with each of the vendors in the collaboration of this design.  Jennifer Broschofsky, owner and manager of Yogurt Experience, was so thorough in the planning process always going above and beyond to make sure each detail of their element was carefully thought out and planned.  She arranged for a tasting with the couple to guide them in the best decisions for toppings and froyo flavor (no surprise, but the cake batter flavor was a huge hit!).  They brought their machines onsite to ensure the quality and flavor of the product Allison and Brandon already knew and loved would be duplicated for their wedding night.   She even made sure to bring out the bride's signature yellow by using the brightly colored yellow spoons all night. Sean suggested adding small details to the ice bar such as creating fitted holes molded to hold the syrups and whipped cream to rest inside as well as a beveled tray cut out for the toppings set inside and displayed to face the guests.  He also added risers flanking the toppings to display the choice of froyo flavors and toppings. Intelligent Lighting Design came up with a cool icy blue hue that was the "icing on the cake" to light up the bar from below.  


Guests raved about the frozen yogurt, but having it built into an interactive and fun display that captured the attention of everyone in the room made the whole combination a memorable element of the night.  With these hot summer days, this was a perfect treat, and we can’t wait to incorporate this entire concept again!

FG Finds: A New Unity Ceremony

For years couples have come together and symbolized the joining of the two families together with a unity candle or even more recently, the unity sand ceremony.  Unfortunately, many churches won’t allow the inclusion of the candles in the ceremony, and an outdoor ceremony almost certainly guarantees at least one flame to go out.   Wind may not be a factor for the unity sand ceremony but you will find yourself protecting those grains of sand from the slightest shift in movement and becoming a less than attractive mess from your wedding night and beyond.  If you do find a way past the wind, the movement, and the bishops, couples find themselves asking where does one end up displaying that symbolic candle or bottle of sand for its own happily ever after?

Enter the newest trend in Unity Ceremonies, Unity in Glass.  The Fairy Godmothers recently witnessed this ceremony, and the end result is STUNNING!!  We just had to share!  The unity glass journey started with our couple, Katie and Miles, selecting three colors: one to represent God and one for each of their families.  Similar to the sand ceremony, the officiant, the mothers of the bride and groom, and the bride and groom themselves each take their turn pouring their respective colors into a glass vase.  Their personal creation shares the same symbolism as other unity ceremonies with the families coming together, supporting the unity of the couple and their marriage surrounded by God’s protection.

After the wedding is over is when the real magic takes place.  The glass crystals are carefully shipped to glass artist, Lee Ware of Unity in Glass where he carefully creates a unique piece of art in his studio.  The final result evokes the emotion shared on the couple’s special day and will last a lifetime proudly displayed in your home.

There are endless possibilities to make the sculpture even more personal to you.  Blended families coming together can include their children in the ceremony and choose colors that represent each of them.  A special family member that has passed can be included in a color.  Recently, Lee created a glass piece that included bits of sand from the beach where the couple was married.  Later he will be creating a sculpture that includes grains of sand from the beaches another couple visited on their honeymoon.  Our favorite idea was this pair of Christmas ornaments featured on the Unity in Glass Facebook page.  A perfect and sentimental parent's gift! We can’t think of a more elegant and personal way to symbolize the start of a lifetime of love than creating your very own unique sculpture formed with Unity in Glass!

Fabulous FG Friday Cocktail: Italian Cream Cake Martini

I don't care for cake. I know, it's shameful.  There are some truly amazing pastry chefs in the area, and I will eat an occasional bite, but rarely a slice.  However, if I'm handed a piece of really good Italian Cream Cake, I can't.resist.  So, in true fashion, we needed to create a martini for the namesake.  After many renditions, this one "takes the cake."

Italian Cream Cake Martini (version 1)

2 parts Cake Vodka

2 parts Vanilla Vodka

2 parts coconut milk (solids removed)

1 part amaretto

Cream cheese frosting and coconut flakes for rimming the glass

Italian Cream Cake Martini (version 2)

2 parts Cake Vodka

4 parts Vanilla Vodka

1-2 parts Almond Joy coffee creamer

Cream cheese frosting and coconut flakes for rimming the glass

Shake with ice, pour, and ENJOY!

Meet Our Vendors: Tiny Pies

Tiny Pies are the ORIGINAL tiny hand-held pie.  We had the privilege of tasting their goodies this week! Their pies are just like grandma used to make…only much, much, smaller. Tiny Pies are made from old family recipes with the highest quality all-natural ingredients sourced from local farmers markets (when possible). You can eat them without utensils and they taste great either hot or cold. They may be tiny, but they are also delish!  Tiny Pies has converted our resident planner that despised pies into a pie fan.

Fabulous FG Friday Cocktail: Poinsettia Cocktail

Emeril's Poinsettia Cocktail

Ingredients:



1/4 cup vodka
1/4 cup Champagne
1/2 cup cranberry juice
Crushed ice
2 strips orange zest, each about 1/4-inch wide and 2 inches long


Directions:


Combine the vodka, Champagne and juice in a large-stemmed red wine glass. Add crushed ice and stir until the mixture is well chilled. Twist the orange strips over the glass, drop them in, and serve

Fabulous FG Friday Cocktail: White Chocolate Peppermint Marshmallow Martini

Pin It I read that this was from Cooking with Sugar, but I can't find it on her site.  (If you find it, I'd like to give proper credit.)  Regardless, it looks fabulous and festive! 

White Chocolate Peppermint Marshmallow Martini

INGREDIENTS:

Marshmallow sundae topping
2 peppermint candies, crushed
Ice
1/4 cup vanilla vodka
1 Tablespoon peppermint schnapps
1/4 Cup white chocolate liqueur

DIRECTIONS:
1) Dip the rim of a martini glass in marshmallow topping then crushed peppermint candies. Drizzle some marshmallow topping on inside of glass; place glass in freezer.
2) In a shaker with ice, add vodka, schnapps, and the liqueur. Shake until mixed; pour into prepared glass. Sprinkle with crushed peppermint.

Fabulous FG Friday Cocktail: Italian Eggnog Martini

Pin It When we saw this recipe on Cooking with Sugar, we *had* to try it!
Trust me when I tell you this drink will warm more than your heart.

Italian Eggnog Martini  

Ingredients:

• 1 oz Disaronno (other Amarettos will work)
• 1 oz vodka (pick your favorite brand, Vanilla Smirnoff is a great choice)
• 2 oz store bought eggnog
• Maraschino cherry
• Cinnamon
• Brown sugar
• Caramel syrup
• Candy cane and cinnamon stick for garnish (optional)

Directions:  (Pictures of directions can be found on Cooking with Sugar's site.)

Coat the inside of a small plate with caramel syrup, sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon. Dip the rim of a martini glass in the mixture and spin back and forth and all around until the whole rim is coated. Place the glass in the freezer.

In a shaker with ice, add the eggnog, vodka and Disaronno. Shake for a minute. Remove glass from freezer. Place one maraschino cherry in the bottom of the glass.

Pour mix from shaker into glass and sprinkle with cinnamon. Garnish with a candy cane and a cinnamon stick.

Fabulous FG Friday Cocktail: Mulled Wine

Pin It Are you gearing up for your holiday events?  Are you still looking for the perfect cocktail? 

Did you read "sent invitations smelling of mulled spice to lure guests to a ranch weekend bash" at the end of our post yesterday?  The same would easily apply to a holiday affair!
I'll admit, I've tried mulled wine before, and I didn't care for it.  Warm wine...not my thing...until this last weekend!

A former Fairy Godmother was in town from Ireland, and several of us went to tour some of the Texas Hill Country Vineyards and Wineries.  Texas Hills Vineyard had some mulled wine in a small crockpot by the register and gave us a sample.  It smelled like "Christmas in a glass!"  It tasted incredible, too!  The ones we bought to share with family in 3 weeks may not last that long in our homes, because we have another cold front coming on Sunday.

Here is the Fairy Godmother version!

Fairy Godmother Mulled Wine

1 t. whole cloves
2 T. dried orange peel
3 three inch cinnamon sticks
1/2 t. allspice berries
Place above ingredients in a tea ball or seasoning bag made for steeping

In a crockpot on "Keep Warm" or "Low", place the following:
1 bottle of red wine (white may also be used, but red is our preference)
1/2 bottle of water
1/4 - 1/2 C brown sugar (to taste)
Mulling spices in tea ball.

(You can use the same amount of mulling spices for up to 3 bottles of wine.  Just remember to add the water and sugar as well.)

Bring the mixture to a very gentle simmer over low heat.



Do NOT let it boil; this can cause spices to turn bitter.

To really allow the flavors of the spices to infuse into the beverage, you should allow the mixture to simmer on the stovetop for at least half an hour.
It's fine to keep the pot warm for several hours, allowing everyone to sip holiday cheer throughout the night. Ladle into mugs (glass toddy mugs / Irish coffe mugs are perfect and still pretty) and serve, garnished with a cinnamon stick.

Around this time of year, invites start pouring in by the day. Nothing thrills us more than one that's more than eye catching. We love these quirky ways to say, "Come to the party". No one fashions a more unique invite than the folks at Orange Spot Pink Nose.

Guests received a holiday message from Steve Kemble in these glass ball ornaments filled with beads.

The next invite was featured in Traditional Home. In this incident, guests received a terracotta pot filled with herbs and an invitation printed on a tea towel.

This arm candy version caught our eye immediately. Way to rock a trend. This would make a perfect bachelorette invitation.

And for the boys, whether it's a birthday or bachelor party, we loved this hands-on surf board invitation. The guys will love it.
